Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) refers to a computer system that collects and analyzes data in real time. SCADA systems are commonly used in plants and equipment in various industries.
It can be composed of a simple or complex system that monitors all types of activity in a specific industrial plant.
How SCADA works
SCADA systems such as a solar SCADA system have been around since the 1960s. It works by collecting and transforming information to a central site and then informing the site of any concerns. In return, the data will be analyzed, whether it is urgent and needed immediate action.
This system also has three major elements — the RTU or the Remote Telemetry Units, Communications, and Human Machine Interface or HMI. The RTU is the one that gathers information and sent to a central site. The HMI, on the other hand, displays the information in a reader-friendly graphical format and saves the data for future reference.
SCADA’s usages
As mentioned, the SCADA system is commonly used in various industries where workforce may be an impractical solution. Aside from solar plants, SCADA systems are also used in other industries and other day-to-day operations such as in:
Public transport and traffic
In mass transits, SCADA is being used to regulate electrical consumption to public transits, including trolley buses and subways. It is also used to locate buses and trains. Likewise, this system is also used to regulate traffic signals and manage the flow of traffic.
Water and sewage management
SCADA is also used by local water utility organizations to ensure regular water flow as well as monitor pipe pressure and reservoir levels.
Manufacturing
Meanwhile, manufacturing companies use the SCADA system to regulate most of its plant function. This includes automation, quality control, and other processes that are crucial to ensure the plant’s smooth and efficient operations.
Electric utilities
A lot of electrical utility companies also use SCADA to detect line voltage and current flow. Likewise, they use the system to regulate and ensure the circuit breaker’s smooth operations.
Why a SCADA software should be updated
The SCADA system continues to evolve over time. For one, this is to ensure adherence to the standards of OS security and corporate IT.
Some clients tend to delay upgrades, but they don’t realize what they are missing out when they don’t upgrade their system. With that said, here are some reasons why a company should invest in upgrading its SCADA system.
Updated and improved HMI’s
Better HMI’s mean better usage in terms of detecting, diagnosing, and responding to specific situations. Likewise, an updated HMI also offers a safer environment for maintenance personnel, especially if it complies with the industry standards.
Provides peace of mind
Many companies may require 24/7 monitoring of the SCADA system. By updating the system, it will give end users tools they can use even if they are present within the monitoring facility.
Opportunity for future upgrades
Technology continues to evolve through time. Upgrading the SCADA system gives the organization to be constantly updated to the latest technological trends. At the same time, you can be ensured that the system will provide efficient and excellent service for many years to come.
